As someone who works in the health, fitness and sports performance industry, I hear a lot of different ways for people to be healthier.
A term that has done the rounds, is nutritional cleansing. What is that, you say?
A simple way of looking at cleansing is to look at cleaning a room. So, you walk into a kitchen and see the benches full of used cooking utensils, a floor that has a lot of grease and grime on it and a sink that has not had a good clean out in a few days. Cleansing the kitchen would really just mean getting rid of all the unnecessary items, cleaning off the dirt and grime and making sure it was a healthy place to cook again.
That, is precisely how I view cleansing your body. We take so many low-quality food and drink options per year in general. It has been said that the average American consumes between 150-170 pounds (about 70kg) of refined sugar per year. That is a lot of energy to have to burn off!
Considering that more than 40% of the population in America does not meet their daily or weekly exercise recommended limits, then there is only one place for all that sugar to end up, which is fat stores.
The fat stores that most doctors are concerned about are not necessarily the fat under your skin. Visceral fat surrounds the major organs of the body and studies have shown that excessive visceral fat can predict the development of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
If your waist measurement is more than 40 inches for men, and 35 inches for women then you probably have too much visceral fat. This also leads to higher health risk of cardiovascular disease, liver disease and it also leads to secretion of hormones that actually increase hunger and stimulate excess fat to leave your tissue and move into your blood stream where they contribute to thickening of your arteries, a major cause of heart attacks and strokes.
A proper nutrition cleansing process will completely change your life if it is done properly and you have a good reason to do a cleansing program. It will give you more energy, help you lose the RIGHT weight and help you retain more lean muscle mass, rather than fat mass. It will also help you perform better at work and in exercise if this is something that interests you!
There are many ways to undergo a “cleansing” process. I have done this personally and the process has completely changed my life in the way I feel, the energy that I have now compared to when I started and what I can do compared to what I could do before I started the nutritional cleansing process.
My recommendation to start is to stay away from foods that are processed, and work with as little processed foods as possible in your nutrition plan. Be prepared.
