So, choosing your first job, what are some important factors to ask?
The first 5 years of your employment after finishing your degree should be about setting up the next 10 years after that. What sort of skill and personal development does a company offer as part of the new graduate experience. If a company is all about the high amounts of money paid, then sometimes they are all about the amount of money you are going to earn. This might be fine short term, but what are you really learning and what support networks are there for you.
What I have learned over the past 20 years of work, is that helping someone have a fantastic experience in their new graduate “honeymoon” phase, which is 18months to 24 months after finishing your degree is important. It sets up the ability to be able to progress someone in their career and their ability to provide leadership. You want to balance the ability to learn about what to do, the experience of “doing” the work and the ability to seek growth and make changes to the ways of working along the way.
