Global Development Delay
Are you worried about your child’s development or think they may be behind their peers? It is well known that all children develop skills at different ages, however, slower development across several areas can be a sign of global development delay or GDD. Children with GDD often have delays in gross and fine motor skills, speech and language, cognition and emotional development.
What causes GDD?
While there is no single identified cause of GDD, there are several conditions that are linked to GDD. Genetic disorders such as Down Syndrome or Fragile X Syndrome, as well as pregnancy or birth complications have been associated with GDD. Children diagnosed with GDD may also later be diagnosed with a specific condition such as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD.
Where to go for help?
If you have concerns about you child’s development or your child has been diagnosed with GDD, an assessment with a physiotherapist can identify areas of concern and develop a treatment plan to get your child on the right track.
