Hydrotherapy, or aquatic physiotherapy, is a form of physiotherapy performed in either a heated or cold pool supervised by an experienced physiotherapist. It is particularly beneficial for people who suffer from injuries or musculoskeletal conditions that are easily aggravated by weight-bearing or land-based exercises. Hydrotherapy can be used in isolation or conjunction with other rehabilitation programs and is often used as a stepping stone to be able to progress to land-based exercises. This therapy is for all ages, benefiting many injuries or conditions too.
The therapeutic effects of hydrotherapy include:
– Muscular relaxation
– Buoyancy of the water counteracting the effects of gravity
– Increased muscle strength and endurance due to the greater resistance in the water
– Improvement of swelling due to hydrostatic pressure
– Improved balance
– Core stability
There is a multitude of different conditions that will benefit from hydrotherapy. Some of these conditions may include back pain, osteoarthritis, pre-operative strengthening for a joint replacement, post-operative rehabilitation for a joint replacement, fractures or tendon repair, rheumatoid arthritis, balance and coordination problems, shoulder pain or sports injuries.
